Learn How to Persuade Your Elders to Stop Driving

Driving is one of the most valuable skills that everyone should acquire, but one must know when to stop. Most elders do not like to embrace that driving may prove to be dangerous for them. And in such cases, other family members must talk with them. However, old age and frailty can be sensitive issues and must be approached delicately.

Many people find it difficult to talk about such issues, but you must do it. Driving requires balance and coordination of the mind and body, which some older people may have a problem. Allowing them to drive by themselves can result in accidents. For instance, if someone shows early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, he should not be allowed to drive. If you are unsure how to speak to your loved ones about giving up driving, here are some tips that might help you.

Pick the Right Moment

Asking your loved ones to quit can be quite a difficult task as you want them to abide by you but at the same time not feel bad. Giving up driving could give way to depression, and your elders would resist. But you must not give up.

Choose a good time to broach this issue. Make sure that no one has to hurry and there is a lot of time to talk about it. You must also make sure that you must not leave immediately once the topic is over. Give some more time to your elders.

Check Your Tone

Do not impose your decisions on them as that could make them feel powerless and weak. Instead, it is best to discuss the risks of driving and talk about the alternatives available like a door to door transportation.
Let them know that they are incredibly precious to you, and you would not want to see them get into trouble. Then, wait for your parents to come around it, and do not pressure them to make a decision immediately.

Do Not Speak Alone

It is best to have your siblings come over to have this conversation. Speaking alone can make the conversation uncomfortable and awkward.

Seek Advice from the Doctor

Personally, discussing the issue of driving may not go down well with your elders. They may feel humiliated or even enraged. Therefore, if you think your parent would not take the conversation and your concerns kindly, it is best to have a neutral person in the conversation. You can ask your doctor to back you up with medical evidence and facts.

If your parents are unwilling to listen to you, they would listen to the doctor. You can also take them for a checkup with their medical examiner and make them see the reason why you do not want them behind the steering wheel.

If your parent has been recently discharged from the hospital, good discharge planning will take care of the immediate transportation of the patient. Still, you must also ask the doctor to be frank with them about their condition and if they are fit to drive.

Send Them for an Eyes Examination

Send for an eye examination to make them believe that you want the best for them. Once they see medical results, they might accept their condition and consider leaving driving. However, if the issue is with their health, it is best to book a doctor’s appointment or have appropriate tests.

Provide an Alternative Means

Asking your parents to stop driving out of concern can be easy. But you must also make sure that they do not face any problems and must have access to safe transportation. While elderly people do not require to drive around too much, they must report to their doctor’s appointments, tests, etc. Unless you have the time to drive them around for each appointment, you must make arrangements for NEMT services.

It may not be safe for the patient to travel by private car in some instances. Regular cars do not have enough equipment for handicapped people, which may cause injury and pain. In such cases, getting a handicapped transportation service is the best option. They offer you the safest vehicle for the patient, along with caretakers responsible for your patient’s safety.

Make your parents familiar with these options as they won’t feel helpless now that they cannot drive. Assure them that they will face no problem when going to the doctor or even if they wish to take a trip. Having a safe alternative will encourage them to take your advice.

Driving requires good eyesight, coordination, and mental and physical balance. Unfortunately, with age, we tend to have problems with balance, memory, eyesight, etc. therefore, driving past your healthy age can cause accidents. Therefore, talking to your elders about this issue is of utmost importance.
